Father Land

Father Land follows two parallel stories. In Westmount, the father of 15-year-old Eric Brook is trying to deal with his brother's deviant behaviour. In the American-occupied city of Mosul, Saddam Hussein's sons have taken refuge in a villa. 
Starring Neil Napier and Howard Rosenstein (previously in The Daily Miracle), the play written by Arthur Holden examines the bonds and limits of male relationships: father and son, and brother to brother. March 11-28 at Bain St Michel. Box office: 514.987.1774.

L'Énéide

Énée doit fuir pour survivre. Son père sur les épaules, son enfant à la main, il court dans les rues avec les siens afin de s’échapper. Ils trouvent un bateau, partent à la dérive, laissant derrière eux un pays en flammes. L'Énéide relate leur long voyage, leur quête incessante d'un nouveau monde.

A Line In The Sand

Set in the desert of the Persian Gulf, A Line In the Sand is the story of Mercer, a troubled Canadian soldier and Sadiq, a teenage Palestinian, who meet in the fall of 1990 during Operation Desert Shield. Overlooking vast cultural differences, the two develop a secret friendship that is violently severed by the torture and murder of the 16-year-old boy inside the Canadian base. Old Winked Songs

Stephen Hoffman, a brilliant young American piano prodigy, ventures to Vienna in the hope of re-igniting his artistic spark. Old Wicked Songs was performed recently in French at Théâtre du Rideau Vert under the title Une musique inquiétante. Trying For The Kingdom

From the same gang who brought us the amazing Haunted Hillbilly last December, Trying For The Kingdom is sure to be another win for the Sidemart Theatrical Grocery. Bringing together the same talented ensemble (Patrick Costello, Gemma James-Smith and Kyle Gatehouse), this one-act production, described as an album/play, promises exciting and non-narrative music from the likes of Iggy Pop and David Byrne.

The Mid-Life Crisis of Dionysus

The Mid-Life Crisis of Dionysus stars Paul Van Dyck as Dionysus. That alone is worth making the journey to the Mainline Theatre. Some regular theatre patrons probably remember catching Paul's past memorable performances in Haunted last fall, as well as in Paradise Lost and The Real Inspector Hound last summer.

However let's face it, Paul has many gifts but sing and dance are not his forte! But no worries, the brilliant chorus ensemble of fourteen woo you with their funky moves and singing/performing abilities.

JERK

L'histoire est simple et sordide. Basé dans les années 70, ce one-man show est une reconstitution des crimes perpétrés par un vrai tueur en série américain (Dean) avec la collaboration de deux adolescents David et Wayne. Dean, dans la trentaine, avait un faible pour les jeunes adolescents beaux et blonds. BENU starring d'bi young

d'bi young is in town at Theatre La Chapelle to unveil her latest addition to her trilogy: Benu. In egyptian mythology, the term "benu" means to rise, to shine. Like the sun god Re, the Benu's own birth is attributed to self generation. It was believed that the Benu Bird appeared each morning under the form of the rising sun, and was supposed to shine upon the world from the top of a persea tree wherein he renewed himself.

Benu, a 30-year-old woman, just recently gave birth to a baby girl in a Toronto hospital. She's had a difficult delivery and the baby's father has decided to opt out. As her blood pressure mysteriously rises at the hospital, this triggers episodes that take her back and forth between a happier phase of her life (her grandmother), and her current struggle to raise her baby alone. Une musique inquiétante

Il est rare que je sorte d'une salle de théâtre, complètement émue et envoûtée par le jeu des acteurs sans prendre conscience du temps qui passe. En effet, je vous invite à découvrir cet incroyable face-à-face entre un pianiste prodige de 25 ans en manque d'inspiration (joué avec fougasse par Emile Proulx-Cloutier) et un vieux professeur de musique (brillamment interprété par Jean Marchand).

Bercée par la musique live de Schumann interprétée au piano par les deux acteurs, l'histoire raconte celle du jeune et arrogant Stefen Hoffman (Emile Proulx-Cloutier, photo à droite) qui se rend à Vienne pour y suivre, malgré lui, des leçons de chant afin de retrouver le goût de jouer.Pour en savoir plus, cliquez sur play pour entendre ma critique-radio.

Our Country's Good

Our Country's Good is set in the rugged and inhabitable Australia of 1788. In order to establish the first British colony, a mix of female and male convicts, as well as military men land in Sydney Cove with barely enough food and resources to withstand the cruel nature of this new country.

Several of the convicts are very young (with their age ranging from 14 to 25) and have committed minor offences for which the punishment was 7 years of transportation with no guarantee of returning  to England.

Living conditions are horrible for this unprepared First Fleet. The land is too hard to farm and the convicts undergo mistreatment by the jailer-soldiers. Some of the female convicts are subject to harassment and disobedient male convicts are wiped continuously.

In order to restore some moral and dignity within this penal colony, Marine 2nd Lieutenant Ralph Clark decides to stage a production of "The Recruiting Officer"with the convicts.

Limbes

Intégrant jeu masqué et musique live, Limbes traite de la vie de Jésus de Nazareth. Le premier chapitre couvre la crucifixion de Jésus, suivie de sa résurrection, créant ainsi le fondement du christianisme. Cette première partie est inspirée par 3 oeuvres Purgatoire, Calvaire et Résurrection du poète symboliste William Butler Yeats (1865-1939). Ce poète irlandais fait des parallèles très intéressants entre le Christ et le dieu grec Dionysos. En effet, Dionysos symbolise le vin et ses excès ainsi que le théâtre et la tragédie dans la mythologie grecque.

Gestes Impies

Gestes impies est une création du Théâtre de la Pire Espèce qui allie une écriture scénique au sujet de la condition humaine.
Il s'agit de théâtre expérimental à admirer tel un vernissage de plusieurs tableaux. Vous découvrirez différents personnages créés dans l'imaginaire de Mathieu Gosselin (acteur dans Romances et karaoké), Marc Mauduit et Francis Monty (texte Romances et karaoké).
Ne vous attendez pas à une histoire de type linéaire avec des personnages clairement définis. Au contraire, laissez vous transporter par le biais des décors, des sons, des costumes et accessoires originaux et imaginatifs, ainsi que par les techniques de jeux de scène communs au cirque et au cabaret.

Simon a toujours aimé danser

Simon a toujours voulu danser est l'oeuvre de Simon Boulerice (voir photo ci-joint) jouant au Théâtre d'Aujourd'hui jusqu'au 30 janvier.
