Unfortunately for a third-year run, this year's edition was a disappointment. The cast of four had the daunting and challenging task of telling eight stories. Some were great, most were weak on delivery.
The tales are realistic with no sugarcoating such as the story of a rape victim seeking refuge in a corner bar (Closing Time), or of the young Emile who overcomes his school bully (Head-Splitting Recess). However some stories were too far-fetched such as the tale that involves cannibalism (Dawn of the Dead). Others are just gross such as the tale of the grown man stuck with his huuuge booger on his hand prior to meeting his fiancée’s family on Christmas eve (Booger Nights). Overall the actors could no connect with the audience.
Out of the eight stories, there were only two tales that were engaging: Thank God It’s Good Friday and One Just Before Midnight. Coincidence? I think not. The very talented and delightful Tristan D. Lalla told both tales. Tristan was able to engage the audience and had us hanging on every single word.
Playing at the Centaur Theatre from Dec. 16 to 19.
